Menstrual cup company Asan has launched a 100% free period tracking app to empower Indian women with knowledge and information about their menstrual cycles.
Founded by Bangalorean Ira Guha, the company insisted on hiring only female project managers, designers and software developers to work on the app. The result is a state-of-the-start period tracker with inbuilt analytics and insights, that is designed to be the perfect health companion to women from puberty until menopause.
To improve access to the digital app amongst all Indian women, Asan is committing to offer it completely for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play store.
Why a period tracking app?
A study by UNICEF found that only 48% of Indian girls are aware about periods when they first experience menstruation, and that only 55% of married women have ever discussed menstrual or reproductive health with a medical professional.
Period tracking is a free and easy way for all women and girls to understand their menstrual cycles and identify symptoms that might suggest health issues.
While most apps focus explicitly on fertility, the Asan Period Tracker is designed to cover all aspects of the menstrual cycle – follicular, ovular, luteal and menstrual. It enables users to track their moods and symptoms throughout these phases and to easily spot irregularities and anomalies.
What makes this app unique?
1. Built for women, by women: Most women’s health apps are built by men. By hiring only female designers and developers, Asan ensures that the customer needs are truly understood, and has proven that women truly excel in the field of technology.
2. 100% free analytics and insights: Most apps have a few free features but charge for insights and analytics. Asan is committed to providing the app 100% for free to all Indian women.
3. Private and secure: The data is not shared or sold to third parties, and there is no in-app advertising. Users can delete their accounts any time.
4. Environmental tracking: The app includes a unique environmental tracker, enabling women to track the carbon footprint of their period products. If you switch from pads or tampons to a reusable period product, such as a menstrual cup or period underwear, you can track in real time how much landfill is being averted and how much money you are saving.
